Welcome to Living Threads
Living Threads is a collaborative, multi-disciplinary art project led by textile artist Joan Murray.
About Living Threads
It began with a series of woven garments created during her residency on Holy Island, where Joan spent ten days immersed in the colours, textures, and rhythms of the landscape.
Inspired by the Lindisfarne Gospels and early Christian art, Joan chose yarns that echoed sacred geometry, vivid pigments, and devotional intricacy.

The garments were shaped by both solitude and conversation. Visitors to St Cuthbert’s Centre engaged with Joan about her process, her materials, and the stories woven into each piece. These garments became vessels — of place, of memory, and of shared presence.
A tapestry of collaboration
Living Threads is, at its heart, a story — the story of how these garments came to be, and the story of each person who has engaged with them through art, movement, and sound.
