Surfboard or seascape?
Broken or perfectly imperfect?

Broken Boards invites viewers to see with fresh eyes and awaken new possibilities. Featuring photographs of broken surfboards, this exhibition highlights the beauty in imperfection while exploring the power of perspective and the insights to be found in adversity.

For Helen, these broken boards are metaphors for experience and endurance–physical reminders of adventure, loss, repair, and beauty born from vulnerability.

Urbane Gazette (Vol 7 Issue 1)

Broken Boards is an exploration of perception and transformation, where fractured surfboards emerge as unexpected canvases. These once-functional boards, now weathered and broken, reveal a profound truth: beauty thrives in vulnerability and imperfection. Each photograph captures a moment in time where labels cease to exist and possibilities emerge, opening up a glorious ride on the waves of perception.

What appears as wreckage becomes an invitation — to see with fresh eyes and to awaken possibilities. To question labels, recognising that catastrophe and opportunity often share the same shore.

Is it a surfboard or a seascape? Broken or perfectly imperfect? Problem or challenge? As nature shapes these splintered boards, so too does life shape us. We navigate currents of adversity, finding resilience and beauty in fractures.

THE
STORY

One sunny winter’s afternoon in Prevelly, a hidden treasure was discovered — an inviting cafe nestled by the beach with an unconventional mosaic of surfboards as a fence.

Drawn by curiosity, I stepped closer. And there, in the fractured grain of each board, I found unexpected beauty.

Splintered edges revealed stories of the sea and exquisite sections of abstract art. The cafe’s surfboard fence became my canvas as my lens captured layers of oceanic poetry.

This serendipitous encounter birthed Broken Boards, a two-years-in-the-making exhibition where imperfection transforms into art, and where wisdom echoes through shattered fragments.

Artist Helen Shearwood kneeling on grass, touching a wooden surfboard that is part of a surfboard fence. The scene is outdoors near a parking lot, with cars visible on the right. There is greenery and plants behind the fence.
